Fashion Waste

“One man’s thrash is another man’s treasure” the same is true when it comes to used clothing. Unfortunately textile recycling rate is currently one of the lowest compared to other materials. But these fabrics including worn jeans, stained garments, mismatch accessories etc. can be given a brand new life in clothing, housing insulation, rugs, stuffed toys and accessories.
Besides recycling, we can get rid of items we don’t need with responsibility by donating them to charitable organizations, thus keeping textiles out of land fills. Also clothing swap and exchange programs amongst the community allows other persons to receive and use different styles, look and feel clothing. After all we do not want fortune spent on our clothing to end up in land fills.

Fast Fashion

Since the 1990’s, consumer behavior has shifted towards shopping for new clothes frequently, but as consumers purchase more clothing, more frequently, it means textile waste ends up in land fills faster. To put it into perspective, in less than 20 years, the volume of clothing each year doubled and is likely to triple if we don’t make a change. The reason for such a drastic increase is fast fashion. To meet the high demands of the latest fashion trends, many brands produce inexpensive, non-durable clothing. Because of this fast fashion brands may churn out new clothing multiple times a month.
Every year between 80 to 100 billion new garment are produced globally of which only 1% of discarded clothes are recycled, rest end up in land fills.

Plastic Bottle Waste

As more and more people embrace the convenience of using throw away plastic water bottles its crucial to understand how this “use and toss” habit is hurting our planet. As per study only 12% of post consumer plastic water bottles. Get recycled and balance plastic bottle waste is picked-up from trash bins and sent to land fills, which normally blow away due to their light weight and later break down into microplastic, polluting surface, water bodies, plants, animals and environment. Let us all create a larger awareness to recycle discarded plastic bottles and reduce the need for virgin polyester production and its carbon foot print.

Factory Waste

The fashion and textile industry is widely criticized for a detrimental environmental impact. Throughout its supply chain operations, increasing demand from fashion consumers has radically increased the production and consumption of apparel which generates a substantial amount of waste at every stage of manufacturing including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing , apparel making and finishing. At present there is a vast knowledge gap concerning the amount of waste generated from the textile and apparel manufacturing industry, and it is essential to fill that gap if waste is to be utilised sustainably within the scope of circular economy.
